Bears@taddy

Bolsover Castle Bears and Tigers had a great day visiting Bolsover Castle as part of our learning topic Magnificent Monarchs.  We had fun exploring the old ruins of the castle, the old kitchens, picnics on the lawn and dressing up as Magnificent Monarchs. We all had a real experience of what life would have been living in such a grand place.

 Infants have been learning about a range of religions in RE but we have been focusing closely on Christianity and Islam. Children have been learning that love is at the heart of these religions; not just love for God, but love for each others and love for our world. Today, we put that learning into practice by showing some love for our Taddington community. Tigers and Bears walked down to the churchyard and did a super job of tidying and clearing around the graveyard, showing a great deal of respect and care. 

  Magnificent Monarchs The Bears have been continuing their journey exploring Magnificent Monarchs in History. We have been learning all about Henry VIII, his life, the laws he made and changed. The class then talked about laws and rules and worked together in groups to come up with their own suggestions for Bears Class Rules. The children enjoyed dressing up and coming together to present their ideas and decide on what was fair, not fair with a thumbs up, thumbs down! It was inspiring to hear their sense of fairness and compassion for their classmates, deciding that kindness, friendship and fairness were to be top of the class rules.                                     We also learnt about Royal Residences and their geographical location throughout the UK. We talked about what it would be like to live in some of the palaces and compared how different it would be to living our own houses....

  Wild Wednesday  June 15 2023   The Bears were excited today to have a visit from Gordon of Wild Weeks. We sat on the magic carpet and were taken on a magical journey through imaginative storytelling, meeting lots of woodland creatures and insects on the way.  Bears enjoyed making simple puppets and taking them to the woods to create a ‘story’ of their own creatures, using the natural materials found in the woods. We used mud and grass as paint, with leaves, twigs and greenery to create a story scene.  Later, the Bears used all of their imagination to write a story all about their creatures and share it with the class.

   Science- Animal Survival                                                         Thursday 15 th  June 2023 Seasonal Changes and Animal Survival Treasure Hunt Today the Tigers and Bears have been looking at seasonal changes and how this effects the behavior of animals. Firstly, we recalled our knowledge of the seasons by describing the plants, animals, daylight hours and weather in each season. Next we looked at how a frogs’ life changes over the seasons. We identified that Spring is the time when a frog has its offspring but in the winter this hibernates due to the cold weather.    Thursday 8th June 2023                  Observing Insect Life Cycles  The Tigers and Bears have been carrying on with our topic of Animal Survival. Today we began our investigation into the life cycles of insects, particularly beetles.  We carried out our investigation using meal worms so we can observe them as they turn into beetles before we release them into the school woods in a few weeks.  Firstly, we created a place for the beetles to grow using cornflakes and potato for them to eat. After setting up our investigation, we used hand lenses to take a closer look. We decided that these meal worms were in the 'larva' phase of their life cycles, however, we did have some that were beginning the next stage of their life cycle turning into a pupa.  After making our observations, we came up with some investigation questions we hope to be able to answer in the next few weeks as we observe their growth. ...

 On Wednesday, we decided to do a little den building, music making and marshmallow eating! The Bears showed fantastic teamwork, tieing the rope around the trees, then testing tarpaulins for size and putting it in place. They then worked together to hammer in 'pegs' (sticks) to secure the den in place. We also had some musicians, creating their own music, experimenting to make different sounds using a variety of materials they found in the woods.  We finished by enjoying some marshmallows in our den and then listening to the performance by the band and having a little boogy to the music.
