The Great Wall of China

Image
This Afternoon, we have been learning about one of the most famous landmarks in China- The Great Wall. The Children were amazed by how long it took, how long ago it was built and how many men it took to build it. After making our own version of the wall, it really helped us to understand the magnitude of it.  We made one version out of play dough, the children took on different roles e.g. brick makers and the builders. They made it as long as the table using individual bricks they’d made! Another version was made out of Duplo. These children  didn’t need to make their own bricks but they were determined to make it tall enough to keep out any intruders.

Chinese restaurant

This afternoon, the Bears set up their own Chinese restaurant. They made vegetable Chow Mein and Sweet and Sour noodles. First, they prepared the ingredients, chopping, peeling and grating the vegetables including: garlic, ginger, spring onions, peppers and carrots.      Next, they added the vegetables to the pan and added oil, sauce and then mixed it all together.     The children then took turns to stir the ingredients in the pan then added the noodles. When the noodles were ready the 'waiters' served the food to the customers. The Bears then all tucked in to their freshly prepared meal- some children used chop sticks!                                                                  After our feast, the children washed and dried the equipment, showing fantastic teamwork!

The magic paintbrush

We have had a fabulous start to the new year! The Bears came into class to discover they had been left a magic paintbrush and special scroll that explained that they should only use the magic paintbrush to do good for others.  After some really good discussions, they painted pictures of things that they thought would be useful for those in need, painting: food, clothes, shoes, drink, houses, tractors and choppers. They then wrote a sentence about their pictures.  On Tuesday, the Bears were surprised to find that their pictures had come to life! They discovered a book in the classroom called ‘The magic paintbrush’ which is set in China and tells a story of Shen, who is also given a magic paintbrush that should only be used to do good.  The children have really enjoyed reading the story over this week, making predictions and discussing what they think Shen should when she is faced with difficult decisions.  We have been learning about China in lots of different ways.
