Damper bread on a stick

Image
This afternoon the infants have been wonderful. They’ve worked brilliantly as team, taking turns and helping one another to make damper bread.  They measured out the ingredients.. ...mixed them together... ...kneaded the dough... ...then rolled out snakes and twisted them around a stick.  We then went to the woodland to light a fire using a flint and steel then cooked the damper bread over it. Well done Tigers and Bears, it’s been very successful afternoon.

Cod Benson

Image
We have been reading the story ‘Halibut Jackson’. At the start of the story Halibut is shy and tries to blend in by wearing suits that match his surroundings. Halibut manages to over come this and becomes more confident. He opens up a suit shop where he is able make lots of friends and showcase his talents.  The children have been enjoying managing the suit shop in our class, where they have role-played helping customers choose clothes for different occasions and ensure the shop runs smoothly from day to day. Yesterday the Bears found a letter in Halibut’s post box from Cod Benson asking for help to overcome his shyness. The Bears thought of ideas to help Cod and replied to the letter as a group.  Today we’ve started to plan a story about Cod by dressing up as him and thinking of places he would go to wearing that suit.  The Bears decided Cod would wear this suit to visit the sheep. This suit to sit on Hatty’s grey sofa...  ...and this one in the garden to match the flowers. We then s

Christmas tree decorations

Image
Last week the bears collected hidden pine cones from the woodland to use for their Christmas tree decorations. First, they painted the pine cones green then left them to dry.  Today, they used a the glue gun to add ‘baubles’ to their tree. Most children hadn’t used a glue gun before but after listening carefully they managed to safely use them.

Positional language

Image
This week we have been using positional language in a variety of different ways.  The children have listened and responded to instructions about how to complete an assault course, going ‘over’, ‘under’ ‘around’ etc different obstacles. As well as directing each other around the course using the same language. They’ve told each other instructions about how position hidden Lego bricks in different ways. For example ‘put the yellow brick on top of the blue and green brick’. We’ve also been on a bear hunt. This activity involved the children hiding a bear around the outdoor area for their partner to find. They had to describe where the bear was hidden and if their partner found it they could keep the bear. The pair with the most bears won. This week we’ve also started our new book ‘Halibut Jackson’. Yesterday, the bears used the positional language they’ve been learning to describe where Halibut is in the different scenes. They used their phonics knowledge as well as the high frequency wo

Sand sculptures

Image
On Monday afternoon, Bears joined Tigers in their Holiday topic work. We discussed sand castles then looked at more complex sand sculptures that are created by some artists. The children were mesmerised by the detail and decided on the tools that they wanted to use to create detail in their own sculptures. They worked in groups and it was amazing to see how quickly each group formed a vision and worked together to create that.  An ant palace with a flower garden A volcano A castle with a road around it An underwater palace and garden

Harry Finch

Image
Over the last week, we have been reading the story ‘Henry Finch’. We have had lots of discussions about what Henry is thinking, throughout the story. Henry uses his thoughts to help to overcome a tricky situation and persuade the beast to do the right thing and therefore save himself and his friends from the him.   Today a Finch from Henry’s flock- Harry Finch arrived in our classroom wanting our help. The children were really excited to read the tag around his neck and discuss how they could help him. We decided it would be best to put some thought into it, so we wrote notes, letting him know that we would help him after we’ve decide the best way to do so. The Bears are starting to select the high frequency words they are learning to read, to use in their writing as well as sounding out unfamiliar words in their sentences. What a bunch of superstars!

Bonfire night artwork

Image
To celebrate the 5th of November we had a competition during forest schools to create a piece of art work to depict an element of bonfire night. In order to gain points and be successful the groups needed to show they were using our school values, particularly ‘working together’ by listening and communicating well with in another. The infants collected natural materials to make their art, including, mud, leaves sticks and stones. It was brilliant to see a variety of ideas and methods from the different groups.  Collecting materials and thinking of ideas  Leafy fireworks  Houses of Parliament sculptured using mud, featuring a mud Guy Fawkes and fireworks display Bonfire with Guy Fawkes on top  Fireworks Talking to the class about their artwork  It’s a been a brilliant and muddy afternoon, well done Tigers and Bears!
