Moon buggies

Image
This afternoon, The Bears were given the challenge to create a 'moon buggy' out of a construction material of their choice. First, we discussed the purpose and features of a moon buggy as well as referring to previous learning about the surface of the moon. The children decided that the buggy would have to be sturdy in order to transport astronauts around the moon successfully. Designing and building    The Bears included special features such  a 'tv camera', 'antenna', ' T-shaped  hand controller', 'seats for the 'astronauts' etc. After completing the build, they then tested their buggies in sand and then down a ramp to see how far they would travel and if it could withstand a bumpy journey.  Testing on the Moon's sandy/rocky type surface. Testing down a self built ramp

Bear book club

It’s been wonderful to see the Bears excited to write books in our writing corner today. They have been folding paper and putting books together and coming up with their own stories then sharing them with one another. The Bears then decided they wanted their own ‘book club’.

Children's Mental Health Week Workshop

We were very lucky today to welcome Lorna Wilkinson into school to run workshops for Children's Mental Health Week. The infants loved thinking about what they would like to do to grow as a person, and who could help them to achieve their goal. We drew around our hands and wrote our goals on them, listing the people that could help us on each finger. We stuck our hands on a tree, showing how we can grow together and help each other. The children then each got to choose an inspirational quote card to take home to remind themselves of how important and special they are. Thank you so much, Lorna for an uplifting afternoon.

Look up!

It's been a very exciting week! We came in to discover a telescope and new book 'Look up!' had been left in our room. We think they must have been left by the character 'Rocket' from the story.  The Bears decided that the story must be about space by looking at the clues on the front cover. Then after reading the first part of the story, they inferred that 'Rocket' must have got her name because of her love of space and her ambition to become an astronaut just like the first African-American women to travel to space- Mae Jemison. We’ve really enjoyed getting into the topic- travelling off into space in the ‘space ship’, discovering the wonders of space, controlling the ship, logging information and reporting back to Earth! We’ve also been busy learning about the planets by listening to songs informing us of their features, then making marble effect pictures of each one based on what we learnt.  We've created our own aliens using pastels and junk material...
