Experimenting in DT- sewing

 This afternoon, Bears experimented with a variety of materials to make crowns.

The started by cutting out paper templates of crowns and added different embellishments. They also thought of ways to join the template together to make the crown sit on their heads.

Once their crown was complete, they experimented with different fabrics to see which would be best to make their final piece with.

We also learnt how to join fabric together using a running stitch. We cut Binca into rectangles and threaded the needle with wool so that we could practise using a running stich. We then folded the Binca over and joined it together to create a pouch.

 Our Week In maths, we have been exploring 3D shapes, which shapes roll and which shapes stack.  We discovered that shapes need be curved to roll and have a flat face to stack. The drum was a cylinder and could roll. In literacy we have started reading 'Look Up', a story all about a young girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut!  We read how Rocket was inspired by Mae Jemison, the first African -American woman in space. Bears didn't think it was fair that African-American people were stopped from following their dreams. We spotted our phonics sounds through our telescope. We then shared, what we dreamed of doing in the future, from becoming an artist to being an ice cream seller. We also counted down as we watched the astronauts take off in the space shuttle and wondered what it would be like to be in space. Odds and evens investigation

 Today, we've been investigating which numbers are odd and which are even. The children went into the mud kitchen area and counted out flowers, sticks, bugs etc. then split each number of objects into 2 groups to see if they could be shared equally. They then recorded their findings and looked for patterns.  Sharing 3 flowers into 2 groups Looking for bugs to share. Checking to see if one flower can be shared into 2 groups. Recording their findings. Sharing pebbles into 2 baskets.
